FAQ
Why won’t my caravan lights work when plugged into the car?
If your caravan lights aren’t working when connected to the tow vehicle, it’s often a problem with the trailer plug or wiring. Corrosion, bent pins, or loose connections in the plug are common culprits. It could also be a blown fuse in the vehicle, a wiring mismatch, or a fault in the earth connection. Using the wrong plug type (e.g. 7-pin vs 12-pin) can also cause issues if not wired correctly. A qualified auto electrician can test both ends and identify the exact cause quickly.
What’s the safest way to wire accessories into my caravan?
The safest approach is to use a properly fused distribution board connected to a dedicated house battery, with each accessory on its own circuit. Wiring should be done with correct gauge cable, protected with appropriate fuses or circuit breakers, and comply with Australian standards. Accessories like lights, fans, and pumps should be clearly labelled and isolated when not in use. It’s always best to have an experienced auto electrician design and install your setup to prevent overloads, shorts, or fire hazards.
How often should caravan electrical systems be checked?
It’s a good idea to have your caravan’s electrics professionally inspected at least once a year, especially if you travel regularly. Before big trips, you should check that lights, brakes, charging systems and internal accessories are all working properly. If your setup includes solar, inverters or lithium batteries, they may need additional monitoring or maintenance. Regular inspections catch wear and tear early, reduce the risk of faults while travelling, and help ensure everything complies with safety regulations.
