FAQ
Why is my car air conditioning blowing hot air?
If your car’s air conditioning is blowing hot air, it’s often due to low refrigerant levels from a leak in the system. But it could also be an electrical issue, like a faulty compressor clutch, pressure switch, or temperature sensor. Blocked condensers, failed fans or damaged blend doors inside the dash can also interfere with cooling. Because modern systems rely on both electrical and mechanical components, it’s important to get a proper diagnosis before topping anything up. A licensed auto electrician can find the fault and fix it at the source.
How often should you re-gas a car air conditioner?
Most vehicles should only require an air conditioning re-gas every few years — there’s no set schedule unless a leak or drop in performance occurs. If you notice it’s not cooling as well as it used to, or the system takes a long time to kick in, it might be time to have it checked. Re-gassing too often can mask a slow leak, so it’s better to have the system tested for pressure and performance. A licensed technician can inspect for leaks, top up the refrigerant, and make sure the system is sealed and operating efficiently.
What causes bad smells coming from car vents?
Bad smells from your air vents usually come from mould, bacteria or mildew growing inside the air conditioning system. This often happens when moisture builds up in the evaporator or filter, especially if the system isn’t used regularly. A clogged or old cabin air filter can also cause odours, as it traps dust, pollen and moisture. In some cases, it might be due to a blocked drain line or even a small animal nesting in the ductwork. Cleaning the system and replacing the filter usually fixes the issue, but persistent smells may require a deeper inspection.
